Cobh Trad Sail regatta will be held on the waters of Cork Harbour this weekend – June 28th until 30th. The event is run in association with the Cove Sailing Club, Commodore Derry Allister and the Naval Service Yacht Squadron, Squadron Captain, Commander Willie Roberts NS. A programme of events to encompass all boat lovers – from those who simply want to watch from the shore, to the most dedicated of boat owners is on offer.
The activities on the water will be co-ordinated by Sailing Master Commander E P Ryan Ns (retd.) and will cater for all types of craft depending on prevailing conditions each day. With the beautiful backdrop of the town of Cobh in the sheltered waters of Cork harbour the annual event promises to build on the spectacular showpiece that it has become. It is an event with a varied and interesting programme that can be enjoyed by all.
The opening reception will be held in the Sirius Art centre, which from 1856 to 1965 was the home of the Royal Cork Yacht Club. The RCYC was formed from the Munster Yacht Club and the “Water Club” of Haulbowline (1720), the first such yacht club in the world.
The locality has such a strong maritime tradition, activities such as the Titanic Trail walk, given by Dr Michael Martin, a visit to the national park of Spike Island, a prison for the transportation of prisoners to the colonies for many years, the Heritage Centre which provides a historical tour of the story of emigration from Ireland and the National Maritime College of Ireland which has a state of the art bridge and engine simulation centre, will provide all sailors with experiences that they rarely have time for. Indeed, with such a packed programme, it will be difficult to fit in the traditional glass of orange.
2013 has been designated the year of the “Gathering”. The Regatta has been designated a Gathering Ireland 2013 event with boats from France, England and Ireland. The schooners Irene, Soteria and Ruth will be present.
