New York visits Cobh

The Speaker of New York City Council Ms Christine Quinn recently visited Cobh Heritage Centre with her father Larry Quinn.  Ms Quinn is strongly tipped to be the next Mayor of New York.

As Speaker of NY City Council Ms Quinn is second in command to Mayor Bloomberg and she is regarded as the third most influential woman in NY after Hilary Clinton and Diane Sawyer. She was voted Irish American of the year in 2008 by the Irish Echo newspaper in New York and is very proud of her Irish roots. Her maternal grandmother Ellen Shine from Meens near Newmarket in Co Cork was a Titanic survivor and her paternal grandmother was from Schull in West Cork.

During her visit to the Centre Ms Quinn was presented with an Annie Moore Statue by the Chairman of the Heritage Centre Mr Con O Conaill. Accepting the statue Ms Quinn gave a firm commitment to work on strengthening the ties between Cobh Heritage Centre and Ellis Island .
